Review – Disney On Ice: 100 Years Of Magic

Want to add a touch of magic to your life this weekend? A trip to Disney On Ice will certainly brighten up this glum and dreary day! A fun day out for Disney lovers and families of all ages is promised!

Disney On Ice returns to its Irish home in Dublins City West Hotel with many of our favourite Disney characters featuring in the show. The City West Hotel is a fantastic venue to host this spectacular show and it is easily accessible by car and also on the Red Luas. It runs from Thursday 13th to Sunday 16th November so you better hurry if you want to catch the most ‘Frozen’ show in town!

Being a Disney lover and a huge fan of Disney On Ice since I was little I was thrilled when I got to go see 100 Years Of Magic a few weeks ago in Manchester with my little cousin Maggie and my Auntie Mairéad.

The best thing about this years show is that there is such a wide range of Disney characters involved. Some years it’s all about the princesses and half way through the show you see the little boys getting a bit restless. This year there truly is something for everyone.

Unfortunately Elsa and Anna, from Frozen, do not appear in this years Disney On Ice but I reckon they have a little more ice skating practice to do. Hopefully we will see them next year!

The show begins with one of the famous Disney Princesses and a simplified version of her story. Later on she is joined on stage by her princess friends for a medley of their theme songs.

As the show continues we meet many fun and exciting characters from both classic Disney movies and Disney Pixar movies. The crowd was especially pleased when Woody and his friends from Toy Story came out to play!

Disney On Ice is such a fun thing to do with your family or friends and the talent of the skaters is excellent. I had to cover my eyes a few times when there was a big jump or someone was flung into the air! Luckily there were no accidents. You can tell that the performers are very well trained and know exactly what they are doing. Simply flawless.

If you are bringing a little girl I highly recommend that you let her dress up in her princess costume. Of course, the boys should dress up as well in their Buzz Lightyear costume or whoever their favourite character is. I even saw some kiddies dressed up as non-Disney characters and that’s okay. It’s their big day out and you want to make it exciting and as special as possible for them.

There are many stalls at Disney On Ice with all sorts of magical merchandise that kids immediately run too. Be prepared to spend a small fortune on a bag of popcorn or a light up wand. The merchandise is a little over priced but it’s all part of the magic of the show to have a crown or a special princess drink.

Necessities we hate buying

Buying things we want is easy because we want them in our lives. We are willing to pay money for them because they make us happy, make us look good and make us feel good. But buying something against our will is just painful. You’re spending money on something that doesn’t necessarily make you happy, in fact, after buying it you’re probably going to be miserable thinking about the money you spent on the thing you don’t want, but need. Here is a list of necessities that anyone will agree are a nuisance to buy, especially if you live away from home.  

1. Toilet Roll

One of the most annoying things that every household has to have is toilet roll. This may be the single most important thing to have and probably the most annoying thing to buy. It’s not pretty, it’s not fun (unless you wrap it around yourself and act like a mummy but let’s face it, that’s just a big waste!) and if you buy a very cheap brand it’s going to run out a lot faster than if you spent an extra €1 on a better brand. Alas we will never learn, we’re always going to buy the cheapest one because that’s what’s best for our pockets at that moment in time. 

2. Tea/Coffee

 A cup of tea or coffee has become much more than a desire, they are now a necessity in many people’s lives. A lot of people cannot begin their day without a cup of the caffeine packed stuff. For some reason we have no problem paying as much at €4.50 for a coffee from Starbucks but when it comes to buying a jar of coffee or a box of tea bags we just resent it. Our minds don’t consider the fact that paying €3 for a box of teabags is far more economical than buying a cup of tea from the cafe down the road that could cost as much as €2.50. As much as you would like to live on take away hot beverages, there’s no escaping the fact that a household has to have tea and coffee. You’ll be thankful you bought them in the long run.

3. Milk

Even if you’re not a big milk fan you simply cannot get away without having at least a pint of milk in your fridge at any given time. You might not fancy drinking glass after glass of the calcium rich liquid but it is needed in many of life’s favourite things such a tea, coffee, scrambled eggs, pancakes and of course cereal. Spending €1 on  a carton can be a killer but it’s just another one of those things you need in your life. 

4. Toothpaste

Who cares about oral hygiene anyway? Everyone should care about oral hygiene. There’s nothing worse than talking to someone who has bad breath and visible plaque on their teeth. “Sure I’ll just get a packet of chewing gum, it’ll be grand” No. Toothpaste should not only be a necessity, it should be the law!

5. Monthly Supplies (Women Only)

When mother nature decided to visit at the same time every month it is never a pleasant experience. Girls are in pain, moody and selfish which is completely acceptable. It all gets much worse when we realise that the money we planned on spending on a Chinese to make us feel better now has to be spent on tampons. There’s no way of getting out of buying them but they really should be free.

6. Glasses

People who have been wearing glasses all their life resent the day when their glasses no longer allow them to have perfect vision. As people get older their vision deteriorates and this means needing new glasses. We will wait as long as possible without going for an eye test for new glasses, it may even take something as dramatic as walking into a glass door to get us to realise that the time has come to splash out on some new frames.

Unfortunately we cannot live our lives without the above items and we will not learn this over night. Perhaps we will learn our lesson to splash out on these necessities when we are home alone and realise all too late that there is no toilet roll available. Happy shopping!

 

A gluten-free surprise!

The weather has been beautiful the past few days here in Dublin and while it’s still a bit chilly who can complain when the sun is out and it’s not bucketing down? I’m certainly not complaining and in fact I have taken the lovely weather as a chance to try and be more active. I even bought a new pair of Nike runners to keep me motivated.

Suddenly all this motivation to cut back on treats and do more exercise went out the window when a certain somebody showed up at my front door this morning with a delicious box of gluten free goodies! I suddenly didn’t care about fitting into that lovely new gold dress I bought in the River Island sale, these pastry’s were the only thing on my mind.

These wonderful things were bought in a lovely little gluten-free bakery called Antoinette’s Bakery located on Kevin Street, Dublin 8. It has a wide range of sweet treats from cupcakes to biscuits to peanut-butter brownies and also does delicious coffee. I highly recommend going there whether you have a gluten intolerance or not, it’s not just for coeliacs! Thank you for the box of desserts but I certainly won’t be fitting into my running clothes in the morning! Haha!

How to avoid being a bold coeliac

Coeliac: A person who is allergic to gluten, the protein found in wheat.

 Living with an allergy, especially a food allergy, can be very challenging on a daily basis. However, sometimes in life we encounter certain occasions in which our desire to fill ourselves with delicious wheat filled foods is much stronger than our willpower to avoid something that could make us incredibly ill. Events such as weddings and birthday parties are where coeliacs are at their weakest. What’s the harm in eating a little cupcake anyway? The truth is it could be very harmful. Why give into five minutes of mouth watering pleasure when 15 minutes later you could be running to the nearest bathroom the throw up the contents of your perfectly iced cupcake? It wasn’t even that nice and now you feel sick, your belly has swollen to the size of a nine month’s pregnant woman’s, you’re miserable and you just want to go home meaning you’re going to miss out on all the fun that’s just getting started. All for the sake of a silly little cupcake. The logic of this story: it’s not worth it, don’t eat wheat. This is a LOT easier said than done so here’s a few tips on how to avoid the ‘wheat belly’.

 One of the hardest places to stick to your gluten free diet is a party. Whether it be a birthday party, an engagement party or even a wedding all of these places are going to have tempting wheat filled food and drink. An important thing to remember is that there are certain alcoholic beverages which contain wheat, such as beer, but most bars will supply other drinks such as cider which coeliacs can drink so this shouldn’t be a big issue. On the other hand the delicious cakes staring back at you could be a bit of an issue. A fun way to fight the urge against these evils would be to make your own batch of gluten free cookies or cupcakes and bring them along to the party as a gift, for the host, that you yourself can enjoy. You could also put a little card in front of them stating that they are wheat free in case there may be any closet coeliacs in attendance too. This way your taste buds are satisfied and your body is happy.

 Road trips can often be difficult also. Travelling in a car or a train for even as little as two hours can get very boring so of course you’ll want something to snack on while listening to your favourites 80’s tunes on your way to the countryside. The danger that coeliacs face is not stocking up on gluten free treats before the trip and pulling in to a petrol garage half way or getting something naughty from the train trolley to get their fix. It’s highly unlikely that a little garage in the middle of the country will have a gluten free section so of course you’ll just have to buy a big bag of bold crisps. The best thing to do to prevent this from happening is to stock up on all things gluten free before the trip. Pop into your local Dunnes or Tesco and pick up as many gluten free brownies or bars as you please. They may not be the healthiest option but anything chocolatey and gluten free is 100 times better than something filled with wheat. You’ll be happy when you’re not pulling in on the side of the road to get sick.

 Long days in college or work can often leave you feeling peckish. You’ve had your lunch and are not hungry enough for a big meal, just a couple of biscuits perhaps or even a little pastry. You’re initial thought is to run to the canteen to get a cup of tea and one of those lovely looking chocolate crossaints that you’ve been eyeing up for the past few days. DON’T DO IT. Instead why not bring a healthy snack from home that morning such as a banana or an apple. They will be kind on your tummy and on your wallet and will sort out your sugar craving.

 Going out for dinner can be stressful. Panicking and picking the first thing that looks familiar on the menu is a big no no. If you’re going out for dinner with friends why not suggest a restaurant that you know has gluten free options? Or if somebody else has picked the restaurant don’t be afraid to ring them up and see if they do gluten free options. Most places have an alternative menu but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If the restaurant doesn’t have gluten free options let your friends know, they’d be much happier if you got a meal that you were able to eat rather than eating something that would make you ill, resulting in you going home and missing out on the rest of the night’s fun.

 There’s no denying that at some points in life it will all become too much and the laws of being a coeliac will be broken from time to time but hopefully these tips will be useful in staying ‘clean’ for as long as possibly. Coeliac out.
